Burden came to Lincoln as an engineer with the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company in the late 1920's. An avid entrepreneur, B.C. soon started an Electric Salvage Company and an Electrical Engineering School. Surplus electrical components were offered for sale as experimenter's kits through the correspondence course books and in articles written for popular magazines dealing with new electrical and mechanical products. B.C.'s sons James II and Paul joined their father and built the company into the "Nationally Known-World Famous" Surplus Center. The mail order business started in Lincoln in 1933, but it was not until 1953 that it was moved to West 'O' street where we continue to operate today. B.C. Burden died in 1982, leaving an abundant heritage of merchandising expertise to his sons, grandsons and great-grandsons. The Burdens still do business according to those early standards: "Treat the people well with reasonable profit to them and to us, and we both shall benefit."
