Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the game, the latest Minecraft 1.20 Trails and Tails update has introduced a delightful addition to the world of Minecraft – the Sniffer. This exciting creature takes the gameplay to a new level by expanding the opportunities for exploration and resource gathering. In this article, we’ll dive into everything you need to know about the Sniffer in Minecraft, unraveling its unique abilities and how you can make the most of this passive mob.

What is Sniffer in Minecraft

The Sniffer, introduced in the latest update, is a mob that stands out for its exceptional ability to dig up ancient seeds. While most mobs in Minecraft have more straightforward functions, the Sniffer’s talent for sniffing out ancient seeds adds a new, intriguing layer to the game. The Sniffer, a passive creature, does not naturally spawn.

Instead, it’s hatched from an egg, making it a unique addition to the gameplay. Even though it’s passive, the Sniffer is far from dull. These adorable creatures are ceaselessly curious, ambling around aimlessly until they detect a spot to dig. Their incredible sense of smell makes them adept at discovering hidden treasures.

How To Get Sniffer Egg

It all begins with a Sniffer egg. But where do these eggs come from? They are tucked away within Suspicious Sand blocks scattered across Warm Ocean Ruins. Suspicious Sand blocks are subtly different from normal sand blocks, making them an archaeological treasure hunt that adds an element of thrill to the game.

Warm Ocean Ruins are hidden under the sparkling waters of warm and lukewarm oceans. They can be easily identified by the aquamarine color of the water and the vibrant coral reefs that surround them. Within these ruins, Suspicious Sand blocks are nestled amid other materials, waiting to be discovered.

If you’re unsure where to start your search, the command “/locate structure ocean_ruin_warm” can lead you to the nearest Warm Ocean Ruin. Alternatively, online resources like chunkbass.com provide locators for these ruins based on your seed and game version.

Extracting a Sniffer egg from Suspicious Sand requires a gentle touch. Either use a Silk Touch enchanted tool or carefully remove the block beneath the Suspicious Sand. Patience pays off here, as each hut in the Warm Ocean Ruins contains one to four Suspicious Sand blocks.

Moreover, you can acquire Sniffer eggs through another intriguing route – by breeding Sniffers using torchflower seeds, a unique item we’ll delve into later in the article.

How To Hatch A Sniffer Egg

Once you have a Sniffer egg, the next stage is to hatch it. Surprisingly, Sniffer eggs are pretty low-maintenance. You can place them on or against any block for them to hatch. However, if you wish to hasten the hatching process, Moss blocks are your best bet. Using bone meal, Moss blocks can easily be spread to other blocks, creating an optimal environment for Sniffer eggs.

The process of hatching Sniffer eggs is akin to waiting for a surprise gift to unwrap. It takes about 10 minutes, with the egg cracking twice before the Snifflet, the baby Sniffer, makes its entrance. The Snifflet then takes another 20 minutes to mature into a full-grown Sniffer.

How To Use The Sniffer

Now that you’ve got a Sniffer wandering around, it’s time to understand how to put its abilities to work. With their noses pressed to the ground, Sniffers follow their senses to spots ripe for digging. They require a space of 6×6 with blocks like dirt or grass to initiate their excavation. Following a successful dig, the Sniffer takes an 8-minute break before setting out on the next search.

Breeding Sniffers using torchflower seeds not only leads to a Sniffer egg but also has other benefits. For instance, it reduces the Snifflet’s growth time and heals the Sniffer by two health points. It’s essential to note that there’s a 5-minute cooldown period after breeding before the Sniffers can breed again.

Torchflower Seeds And Pitcher Pods

In their hunt for ancient seeds, Sniffers can unearth two types of seeds – Torch Flower seeds and Pitcher Pods. These seeds have their unique uses.

Torch Flower seeds can help breed Sniffers, reduce the growth time of Snifflets, and restore health to the Sniffer. Moreover, they can be cultivated on Farmland to grow Torch Flowers, which can further be crafted into orange dye.

On the other hand, Pitcher Pods grow into Pitcher Plants, also on Farmland, and can be crafted into cyan dye. Both Torch Flowers and Pitcher Plants can be grown quicker using bone meal and can add a decorative flair to your Minecraft world owing to their unique appearances.
